CASE STUDY: How This Construction Company Built Their Team’s Communication Skills

Your team is hardworking, passionate and works well…but do they struggle to work well together?

Small cracks in communication (misunderstandings, unresolved conflicts, and feedback that doesn’t land) can lead to major inefficiencies. That’s exactly what ABC Construction faced before we worked together.

Let’s discuss how we worked together to build a culture of trust, communication, and collaboration.

The Challenge: Conflict & Communication Barriers

ABC Construction is a growing company with 30+ employees. As their business expanded, the leadership team worked hard to define their values and mission. But as with any growing business, it became harder to keep everyone on the same page.

When we first spoke, their key challenges were:

  • Their employees struggled to handle conflict effectively.

  • There was a lack of emotional intelligence across teams.

  • Feedback conversations were being avoided or ignored.

The Approach: Building Communication Skills Through Customized Workshops

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for building your team’s communication skills. After listening to ABC Construction’s challenges, I developed a strategic plan that would target the areas of concern.

Building a Foundation First by Focusing on Self-Awareness and Trust

The first workshop focused on self-awareness, communication styles, and how each employees needs translated into behaviours. In just four hours, employees gained insights into their personal communication patterns and felt equipped to navigate challenges more effectively.

Employees immediately noticed a change in their communication. After learning about different styles, they quickly applied their insights. The team even began holding each other accountable in a lighthearted way. When someone interrupted, a colleague might joke, “Is that your high C?” (a reference to the communication style known for its sense of urgency).

Transforming Conflict into Collaboration

Three months later, I held another workshop focusing on conflict resolution. The workshop shifted their mindset on conflict, helping employees see it as an opportunity for problem-solving rather than a negative experience.

I introduced a framework to help employees understand their own fears around conflict and how to engage in difficult conversations. Because the team already understood their communication styles and those of their colleagues, they could be more confident in addressing conflict directly, adjusting their approach based on personalities and situations.

Giving Feedback and Improving Coaching Conversations

Now, instead of constantly putting out fires, the team was ready to start growing together.

ABC Construction is a fast paced environment, and creating a culture of feedback is essential to their success. To help build feedback and & coaching skills, I used role-plays, interactive activities and real-world scenarios to help them practice the key skills needed for coaching and feedback, building their confidence. They learned structured frameworks to make these conversations more productive and less uncomfortable.

By the end, they had practical skills to support each other and address tough topics.

This wasn’t just training; it was a turning point. ABC Construction had transformed from a group that avoided conflicts to one that confidently faced them head-on. They could now effectively give and receive feedback instead of having conversations blocked by misunderstanding and mistrust.

Pivoting to Adapt to Organizational Growth

With plans to double in size in 2025, I knew that ABC Construction’s ability to be resilient and manage change would be tested. We adjusted our strategy and have focused our next workshop on these areas, giving the team a framework for handling the upcoming changes effectively.

As a true partner and by understanding ABC Construction’s overall business goals, I could be flexible and adjust their program to reflect the realities of their growing business.

The Results: A Stronger, More Aligned Team

What has this approach meant for ABC Construction?

  • Faster conflict resolution: Instead of getting stuck and avoiding conversations when conflict arises, they now work through these challenges together.

  • Stronger leadership: Giving and receiving feedback and applying a coaching approach is expected as part of their ownership culture, and it is received with openness.

  • Increased efficiency: Clearer communication has reduced downtime, improved teamwork, and built a culture of trust.

By investing in their team’s development, ABC Construction didn’t simply get their team to get along. They built a stronger, more connected team that celebrates diverse perspectives and can get more done. And because I’ve be connected throughout the year, I’ve come to be a familiar face, where the trust builds each time we meet, deepening the impact of every session.
